How We Test & Review AI Tools
Transparent methodology behind every ToolDepth review, comparison, and recommendation.
Our Promise: We recommend tools we would use ourselves. Every review is based on hands-on testing, not spec sheets. We do not accept payment for rankings or reviews — every tool is evaluated purely on its merits.
How Tools Are Selected
We don't review every tool. Each tool is selected based on:
- Market relevance — Is it being actively used and discussed? (Twitter, HN, Reddit, G2)
- Category fit — Does it solve a real problem in AI, automation, coding, writing, SEO, or video?
- User demand — Are people searching for comparisons? ("n8n vs Make", "Claude vs ChatGPT")
- Accessibility — Can we get hands-on access? (Free trial, demo, or open-source)
Testing Process
Every tool goes through a standardized 4-phase test:
Phase 1: Baseline Setup
- Install / sign up using the standard onboarding flow
- Test with default settings first (what most users experience)
- Document setup time, friction points, and hidden costs
Phase 2: Core Feature Testing
- Run each feature through real-world scenarios specific to the category
- For AI writing tools: generate blog posts, emails, ad copy, landing pages
- For automation tools: build workflows from simple (1-step) to complex (20+ steps)
- For AI coding tools: refactor real codebases, debug errors, generate from scratch
Phase 3: Side-by-Side Comparison
- Run identical tasks across competing tools
- Compare output quality, speed, cost, and ease of use
- Score each dimension on a 1-10 scale
Phase 4: Long-Term Use
- Use the tool for 7+ days in production-like conditions
- Test support responsiveness, reliability, and hidden limitations
- Update review if the tool changes significantly
Scoring Criteria
Each tool is scored across 6 dimensions, weighted by category:

Editorial Independence
ToolDepth does not participate in affiliate marketing. We do not accept payment for reviews, rankings, or placement. Every tool on this site is evaluated purely on its merits.
- Independent testing. Every review is based on hands-on use — not spec sheets or vendor materials.
- No paid placements. Tools cannot pay for higher placement, better ratings, or inclusion in comparisons.
- No sponsored reviews. We do not accept "pay for positive coverage" arrangements. Ever.
How We Stay Unbiased
- Independent testing. All tools are tested by our team using our own criteria. Vendor marketing materials are ignored during scoring.
- No pay-to-play. Vendors cannot pay for higher placement, better ratings, or inclusion in comparisons.
- Regular updates. Reviews are refreshed when tools release major updates. Check the "Last Updated" date on each article.
- User feedback. We welcome corrections and alternative experiences. If a tool has improved (or worsened), we update accordingly.
