How We Test AI Tools

Our methodology is the foundation of every review on ToolDepth. Here is exactly how we evaluate, rate, and compare AI tools — and why you can trust what you read.

Our Testing Process

Every tool reviewed on ToolDepth is tested hands-on for a minimum of 7 days before we publish a single word. Many tools get several weeks of use. We do not rely on press releases, marketing materials, or demo videos. We sign up, set up the tool, and run it through realistic workflows that our readers would actually use.

Our testing follows a structured checklist:

  • Day 1-2: Account setup, onboarding, and initial feature exploration. We document the first-run experience and any friction points.
  • Day 3-5: Real-world task execution. We use the tool for actual work — writing copy, generating images, automating workflows, or writing code, depending on the category.
  • Day 6: Stress testing. We push the tool beyond casual use: larger outputs, complex prompts, integrations with other services, and support response times.
  • Day 7+: Comparative analysis against competing tools in the same category, pricing evaluation, and final scoring.

For tools that require team collaboration or enterprise features, we extend the testing period to ensure we can properly evaluate those capabilities as well.

We keep receipts

Every review includes screenshots, timestamps, and specific examples from our testing sessions. Nothing is staged or simulated.

Rating Criteria

Each tool receives a score out of 100, weighted across five categories. Here is the exact breakdown:

Category Weight What We Evaluate
Features 25% Does the tool actually deliver what it promises? We test every advertised feature, assess output quality, and check for missing or broken functionality. Bonus points for features that exceed expectations.
Pricing 25% Does the value justify the cost? We compare pricing against competing tools, evaluate free tiers and trial periods, and calculate real-world cost per use for individuals and teams.
Usability 20% How practical is the tool in day-to-day use? We assess the learning curve, interface design, workflow efficiency, mobile experience, and how quickly a new user can produce useful results.
Real-World Results 20% Not just specs — actual outcomes. We measure output quality, consistency, speed, and reliability under realistic conditions. A tool with impressive features that fails in practice scores poorly here.
Support 10% What happens when something goes wrong? We test support response times, documentation quality, community forums, and knowledge base depth. Good support can save hours of frustration.

Each category is scored individually, then combined using the weights above to produce the final rating. This system ensures no single factor dominates and that every review is balanced and repeatable.

Why We Don't Accept Paid Reviews

ToolDepth has a strict policy: we do not accept payment for positive coverage. No amount of sponsorship or partnership will influence a review score or placement. Period.

If a company wants us to review their tool, they can submit it through our Submit Your Tool page — just like everyone else. We will test it on the same timeline, against the same criteria, and publish our honest assessment regardless of whether the company likes the result.

We have turned down paid sponsorship offers specifically because they came with requests for favorable coverage. Every dollar we earn is earned transparently (see below) — never through selling editorial influence.

✗ No pay-for-play

If a company could buy a good review, the site would be worthless. We keep our integrity because it is the only thing that makes ToolDepth valuable to you.

How We Make Money

Transparency matters, so here is exactly how ToolDepth is funded:

  • Affiliate commissions. Some of the links on this site are affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. This is the primary way the site is supported.
  • No sponsored reviews. We do not accept payment from tool companies to review their products. Ever.
  • No premium placement. Companies cannot pay for better rankings, higher scores, or featured positions in our comparisons.

Affiliate income allows us to spend the time needed to test tools thoroughly and publish detailed, honest comparisons. If you find our reviews helpful and make a purchase through one of our links, you are directly supporting the site — thank you.

ⓘ Affiliate disclosure: ToolDepth participates in affiliate programs for many of the tools we review. We only recommend tools we have tested and genuinely believe in. Our recommendations are never influenced by commission rates or affiliate partnerships.

Editorial Independence

Editorial independence is not just a policy — it is the foundation of ToolDepth. Here is what that means in practice:

  • No advance approvals. Tool companies do not get to review, approve, or veto our content before publication.
  • No scripting. We do not provide companies with lists of questions or talking points before testing. Tools are evaluated on our terms.
  • No retractions. If a tool releases a bad update or degrades in quality, we will update our review accordingly — regardless of any existing affiliate relationship.
  • Full editorial control. All content on ToolDepth is produced, edited, and published by our team alone. No outside party has editorial authority over this site.
🔒

Your trust is our only asset

If we lose your trust, we lose everything. Every editorial decision is made with that principle in mind. We will never compromise our independence for short-term revenue.

Update Frequency

AI tools evolve rapidly. A review that was accurate six months ago may be outdated today. Here is how we keep our content current:

  • Quarterly re-reviews. Every published review is reassessed at least once every 3 months. If a tool has changed significantly, we update the review with new testing.
  • Major updates trigger re-testing. When a tool releases a significant version update, pricing change, or feature overhaul, we flag it for immediate re-evaluation.
  • Transparent dating. Every review page includes its last-updated date so you know exactly how current the information is.
  • Deprecation notices. When a tool is no longer competitive, discontinued, or acquired, we clearly mark the review and may retire recommendations.

We also track user feedback and reader comments. If multiple readers flag an issue with a tool that our review did not cover, we re-test and update the page.
